Governor-General calls on the United Nations to Act.

Statement on Current Eritrea and Djibouti Border Conflict

Date: October 25, 2008 03:12PM

As tensions mount in the border area between Eritrea and Djibouti we call upon the United Nations to take those steps needed to ensure the peaceful maintenance of existing borders.

Previous calls for the withdrawal of Eritrea's Armed Forces by the United Nations have been unheeded, and we suggest that perhaps now is the time for something more than mere words from the United Nations.

The disingenuous of the Eritrean government's claims in regard to the matter increases our concern.

We are encouraged by the efforts of the government of France to restore peaceful interaction among the nations in that area.

Should the United Nations fail to provide a means for peaceful resolution of this dispute it will have again demonstrated its uselessness as a peacekeeping organization, and provided yet another reason why nations should not look upon it as any other than a rather expensive debating club.

We are pleased that the Iranian Government has moved a step closer to affirmation of the Pensacola Convention on the Rights of the Child.
